The Tribune report on the Vatican refusing to allow the theology faculty at a Swiss university to award Milwaukee Archbishop Rembert Weakland an honorary degree included the incredible observation that this ”raised questions about the influence of anti-abortion groups in the Vatican.”

That the Catholic Church recognizes abortion as a sin is, and always has been, a matter of doctrine. I am therefore baffled as to what type of influence pro-life groups might have on a body who already considers its views to be law. If the Tribune were to report on a professional baseball game wherein a batter was called out after swinging at and missing three consecutive pitches, could we expect to read that the call raised questions about the influence of pro-strikeout rule groups in the commissioner`s office?
