Regarding ”Time to take high-speed rail seriously” (Nov. 10): It is ironic that one of your correspondents should be proposing a review of transport spending to facilitate high rail speeds on the very day that one of the country`s most famous trains, the Broadway Limited, runs for the last time, along the current routing to Pittsburgh. A change in the routing
(primarily, it seems, to save money) adds 51 minutes to the schedule to Philadelphia.
From England, and touring around the states on a U.S. railpass, I find myself by accident on the ”last train.” The boardings have been good to excellent throughout and track quality fair. As I understand it, the necessary money cannot be found to keep a 200-mile section of Consolidated Rail Corporation track suitable for passenger train use.
There are, no doubt, local and national political issues at work, but in the end it is the passenger who loses. I hope you are able to draw people`s attention to this.
