We are judged, they say, by the company we keep and by the clothes we wear, but also, perhaps, by the gifts we give. Hardware stores and garden and home centers can yield imaginative gifts for the inveterate do-it-yourselfer, the rehab addict, the green thumb and even for the hopelessly unhandy. A snappy design or a new version of an old standby can make the most mundane item appealing.
The products here prove that ”practical” doesn`t have to mean
”boring.” If you can`t find a product, the manufacturers listed can guide you to the proper stores and enable you to order some items by mail. All prices given are suggested retail, but discounts are available at certain stores.
Multi-bit screwdriver
Here is a new twist on an old standard that should reduce scrounging around for the right size screwdriver. Sicommerce Inc. has developed the Revolver Screwdriver, a set of six screwdrivers combined in just one tool. For sawing and more
The name C-Saw may sound like a children`s game, but this new combination tool from Sonin is childlike only in its simplicity. The C-Saw has a design that professionals can appreciate, but novices will find easy to use. A black plastic case houses seven basic cutting and layout tools: a wood saw for use in the workshop or garden, a hacksaw, a carpenter`s square, a protractor/

Cooler glue gun
For the craft enthusiast, Stanley-Parker has created the Cool Melt glue gun. This white gun with a blue trigger is safer and more versatile than the former designs. Its tip remains 155 degrees cooler than those on standard hot melt guns, reducing the risk of burns. The bonding strength of the Cool Melt glue sticks is comparable to the hotter sticks`, but the lower temperature increases applications to such materials as polystyrene foam, synthetic fabrics and even balloons. Price: $11.99 or $19.99, depending on size. Stanley-Parker, c/o Dave Nicholson, 149 Washington St., Worchester, Mass. 01610 (508-795-0909).
