Ideal for apartments, rats and mice are easy to care for and don`t need much space or food, according to members of the American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association.
Here`s what you need to get started:
– A gnaw-proof cage, terrarium or screen-topped aquarium, kept away from direct sun or drafts.
– A water bottle to provide clean water at all times.
– A feed dish that`s easy to clean and sturdy enough to prevent spilling. – Sleeping boxes, made from nontoxic household containers such as jars or oatmeal cartons.
– Exercise wheel.
– Wooden gnawing block to hone teeth.
– Pine shavings, bought at a pet store, for bedding. Do not use cedar chips, because they can cause respiratory ailments.
– Laboratory pellets and a grain mixture, available at pet shops, make the best diet, complemented with greens, fresh fruit and vegetables and whole wheat bread.
