Batavia could go from one extreme to the other if the City Council adopts a recycling plan recommended by its Solid Waste Advisory Committee.

The committee has recommended that Batavia, one of the few western suburbs without any recycling, should support a plan that includes the curbside pickup of seven different kinds of materials, as well as leaving room to add more.

”It fits with the whole philosophy of recycling,” said Chairman Lee Moorehead. ”The more you recycle, the less you have to put in the landfill and the less you have to rely on raw natural resources like trees and metals.”

The recommended materials include plastic milk jugs, plastic detergent containers and plastic soft-drink bottles, as well as more common items such as newspapers, glass and aluminum and tin cans.

Most municipal curbside pickup programs concentrate on newspapers, aluminum and glass.

A council committee is studying the committee`s report.

The recycling program is scheduled to begin July 1.
