Though the Mundelein Village Board has agreed to join a county-municipal agency to build solid waste-disposal facilities in Lake County, it does not want to participate in any incineration projects the agency may pursue.
In a unanimous vote this week, the Village Board approved an intergovernmental agreement establishing the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County and an initial contribution of $12,500 to the project.
The agency is being organized to build waste-disposal facilities because the county`s sites are expected to fill up as early as 1993. A countywide solid-waste-disposal plan calls for landfills, composting and incineration.
But at the last minute, Village Trustee Ralph Rohling submitted a resolution opposing present incineration technology for disposal of solid waste. In his resolution, he cited concerns about threats to public health, toxic ash, disease-causing toxic elements being added in the food chain and the expense of resulting lawsuits as reasons for opposing incineration.
