Regarding Joan Beck`s column on the dangers and divisiveness of Afro-centric school programs:

One cannot overemphasize the importance of a well-rounded education. But as long as we have presidential races with Willie Horton ads, Senate races with quota ads and more negative images of blacks than positive ones, self-esteem and ethnic pride must be addressed in some setting.

Teaching the ”historic American ideal” of ”hard work and diligence”

will not be the total solution for minorities until those in control can truly disregard race and sex and look only at qualifications.
