John Rill, 79, a retired building engineer and World War II Marine Corps veteran who fought in the battles of Iwo Jima and Saipan, died Friday in St. Francis Hospital, Evanston. Mr. Rill, a Chicago resident, worked as a building engineer at 6725 N. Sheridan Rd. until his retirement five years ago. Mr. Rill was a member of the Northwest Suburban Marine Corps League, American Legion, VFW and 4th Marine Division Association. He also was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Newman-Columbus Council 1077. Survivors include his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Kathy Steffen; a sister; and six grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday in Donnellan Fitzgerald Franklin Funeral Home, Evanston. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Margaret Mary Church, 2324 Chase Ave., Chicago.
