In the ”Class of `65” article (”Class Picture,” by John McDonough, Nov. 11), the term ”mean” was repeatedly used when ”median” was apparently intended. ”Mean” is synonymous with ”average,” and the distinction between these statistics (mean/average vs. median) is an important and useful one. It is admirable that your author thought to include both of them, but if people start using ”mean” to mean ”median,” there will be chaos.
