In a city noted for its architecture, it is a serious omission when a reporter writes about the Elks National Memorial Building, describes its interior columns made from 26 different kinds of marble and praises the splendor of its rotunda, but fails to mention the style of the building or the name of the architect.

One of the best examples of Beaux-Arts architecture on the north side of the city, the Elks Building was designed by Egerton Swartout in 1926; the addition was by Holabird and Root in 1967.
