I thought I had seen every perversion of the English language, but the Soviet Union`s internal convulsions have produced a new one: characterizing old-line communists as ”the right” and, by inference, the liberalizers as
”the left.”
By definition, communism is as far left as one can go on the political spectrum. The reactionaries who are trying to preserve the communist dictatorship are therefore ”left-wingers.” Those who are attempting to introduce a free-market economy, establish personal freedom, etc., are (like their counterparts in the West) ”the right.”
