At what point does commentary become balderdash? Roger Simon`s ”The unknown factor in gun control” (Tempo, Dec. 27) seems to be long on opinion but short on facts. Simon says ”more than 60 people are killed with handguns every day in the U.S.” He cites no source for this number.

In an article in December`s Southern Illinois Outdoors, Art Reid cites his sources, namely FBI reports and the National Safety Council. In 1988, there were 20,680 murders and non-negligent manslaughters. Handguns were involved in fewer than half-8,278.
