The letter by Rachel E. Golden, chairperson of New Outlook International Advisory Committee, is a miscalculation as a path to a ”safer, saner Middle East.”
The suggestion that the ”immediate and unilateral” establishment of a Palestinian state, along with military and economic support of its Arab
”neighbors,” will solve the present Middle East problem is both naive and impracticable.
In linking the Palestinian situation to the Iraqi takeover of Kuwait, Saddam Hussein hopes to build a coalition of Arab support for what is clearly the blatant suppression of the Kuwaiti people. This move must not be condoned or rewarded with compromise.
Though the Palestinian-Israeli conflict must be dealt with, it must not be under the pressure of unfounded linkage, as suggested by Hussein, but in a diplomatic atmosphere of negotiations. These two must be seen and dealt with as separate issues with separate solutions.
