I am shocked to find I am growing fond of that rusty rectangle framing the Picasso at Dearborn and Washington Streets.

Wonder of wonders, the Daley Civic Center is indeed assuming a delightful mahogany hue, as the architects had predicted, though I and Royko pooh-poohed that prediction.

The soaring steel and glass box makes a strong and elemental Chicago statement. This is the ”power building” of the Loop.

The underlying message is that an ugly duckling may indeed become tomorrow`s swan. No building could better commemorate our beloved Richard J. Daley.
