Joan Beck`s column ”Why does it take a war to inspire U.S. ingenuity?”

was quite interesting. I believe there is no question about U.S. ingenuity. It was just misdirected all these years. Whereas Japan chose to direct all its research efforts toward producing the ”better” consumer good, the United States chose to channel most of its research and development funds into defense weapons. The rationale, then, was to maintain a balance of power between the USSR and the United States.

The Cold War is over. It`s high time the United States start redirecting its R&D efforts. Only then can it challenge Japan`s supremacy in the consumer technology market.
