Margo Hammond is correct about the ignorance of most Americans concerning other parts of the world (”Quickie books and instant enemies,” op-ed, Jan. 31). To her reading recommendations I would add the Human Rights Watch publications, particularly the annual reports on the persecution of independent rights monitors, and ”Semites and Anti-Semites” by Bernard Lewis.
The latter concentrates more on the cultures of the Middle East than on specific countries, but it is a vital source for someone who wants to understand the increasingly vicious and irrational hatred towards Israel displayed by our Middle Eastern ”enemies” and ”friends,” past or present.
