I appreciate columnist Mona Charen`s remarkable discernment in identifying a hidden dividend of the gulf war. According to her, the inevitable American victory will alter our self-image, at present hopelessly smudged by the Vietnam experience. Despite our domestic problems, it will restore our morale and self-esteem as a nation; our self-doubt and self-denigration will be wiped out.

This thrilling transformation will take place all because we defeat a small Third World country without one ally and led by a two-bit mugger who apparently is a quart low. I had no idea that national psychological rehabilitation was so easy to come by.
