I`d like to know how Supt. William Kritzmire of School District 54 defines the word ”universal,” as in ”The yellow ribbon . . . is a universal symbol of caring” (Hometowns column, Feb. 5).

This symbol is unknown in those European countries I have lived in, apart from those old enough to remember Tony Orlando`s 1973 record. And in Britain the color yellow is used to symbolize cowardice.

Where does the ”universe” end?
