It was with great satisfaction that I read Mike Royko`s column Feb. 5 reviving the memory of the immortal Hack Wilson and the injustice done to this man by sports writers.
As a Cub player during the 1930 season, Hack Wilson amassed the following statistics: 208 hits, 35 doubles, 6 triples, 56 home runs, 146 runs scored, 190 runs batted in, a batting average of .356 and a slugging percentage of .723.
The biggest shame of all is that the electors of the Hall of Fame denied him entrance until 1979-49 years after he compiled this record. His records of 56 homeruns and 190 runs batted in still stand 61 years later.
The Cubs organization should place a banner or pennant with his name and number high above center field. This would be the same recognition accorded Ernie Banks and Billy Williams.
