President Bush made a good move in bypassing the Soviet peace plan. It offered nothing but delay and deception.
On Feb. 9 the Soviet Union signaled its true loyalty to Iraq by letting the allies know it supported the UN mandate ”in principle” but not in reality. Mikhail Gorbachev`s effort as a peacemaker was nothing more than a thin veneer to save Iraq and sell more arms to his best client.
As a peacemaker, Gorbachev has defied the results of a free election in his own country and murdered true peacemakers: his own people. Not a tear will be shed with the ouster of Saddam Hussein. May the same be said of Gorbachev.
