Geneva City Council members have passed a resolution protesting the
”arbitrary and excessive” rate increase proposed by Jones Intercable.
In addition, the resolution requested that congressional representatives reinstitute regulatory authority originally granted to local governing bodies. Ald. Paul Descoteaux, however, suggested a different solution. ”People ought to send a strong message by canceling the cable service or perhaps not paying their bill for a while,” Descoteaux said. ”Then they could go to the library and check out a book.”
Cable rates have increased from the $7.25 monthly charge in 1987 to a $20.95 basic service charge effective April 1.
