1973 was a banner year for Chicago Public League athletic teams. In the winter, Hirsch won the state Class AA basketball championship behind Rickey Green and John Robinson, beating New Trier 65-51 in the title game. In the spring, Hubbard won the state baseball crown, stopping Belleville West 3-0 for the title. And in the fall, Harrison won the state soccer championship, beating Morton East 1-0 for the title.
