No, Chicago designer Wayne Carey, did not rip up old swimming pools for his creation appropriately dubbed ”diving table.”
Yes, people really do have places they want to put this most unusual of furniture designs.
”I have a client who has just the spot for that,” purred an interior designer to Carey during a champagne reception to introduce this and other new designs at DIA Chicago showroom in the Merchandise Mart. ”It would be great beside her pool.”
Made of concrete, tile and tempered glass, the limited-edition table weighs in at a hefty 180 pounds. At $9,500, the pricetag is a bit hefty, too. Carey added, ”We deliver.”
Carey, who works in advertising during the day and designs furniture at night, said the idea ”just came to me while I had some down time by a pool.” The first step in making the table is pouring concrete into a form.
”All the concrete is jack hammered to achieve the rough edge,” Carey explained. ”We can change the color of the tiles to coordinate with a color scheme. And we are thinking of adding a pool light in the concrete base to shine up toward the glass.”
Although there were no immediate orders, Carey showed little concern.
”We`ve had a lot of people show interest.”
