Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

1 (26th) Henry Jones DB Illinois

2 (54) Phil Hansen DE N. Dakota St.

3 (82) Darryl Wren DB Pitts. St.,Kan.

– Comment: Cornerbacks in the first round of the last two drafts should strengthen a defense already tough up front. Jones might play safety and small-college speedster Wren could help inside, too. Bills have unusual luck with small colleges (Andre Reed), so Hansen bears watching on defensive line. CINCINNATI BENGALS

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

1 (18th) Alfred Williams LB Colorado

2 (52) Lamar Rogers DT Auburn

3 (72) Bob Dahl DT Notre Dame

4 (99) Donald Hollas QB Rice

4 (109) Rob Carpenter WR Syracuse

– Comment: After making league-low 25 sacks last year, eight by rookie James Francis, Bengals loaded up on defensive pass rushers. Williams, Rogers, and Dahl all have a chance to start, but none is in the can`t-miss category. Bengals were 26th against pass, 22d against run, 25th overall.

CLEVELAND BROWNS

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

1 (2nd) Eric Turner DB UCLA

2 (29) Ed King G Auburn

3 (57) James Jones NT N. Iowa

4 (85) Pio Sagapolutele DT San Diego St.

– Comment: Bears` Mark Carrier showed the immediate impact a safety can make on a defense. New coach Bill Belichick figures Turner will fill one of team`s many needs faster than anybody else. King will start to patch up a shaky offensive line for Bernie Kosar, but the Browns appear more than one draft away.

DENVER BRONCOS

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

1 (4th) Mike Croel LB Nebraska

2 (30) Reggie Johnson TE Florida St.

3 (61) Keith Traylor LB C. Okla. St.

4 (89) Derek Russell WR Arkansas

– Comment: Croel is the fastest linebacker in the draft and the Broncos are desperate for linebackers. Johnson will replace troubled tight end Clarence Kay, who may face a suspension for alcohol abuse. An offensive tackle still is a necessity, especially if Gerald Perry`s problems with the law don`t go away. HOUSTON OILERS

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

2 (28th) Mike Dumas DB Indiana

2 (38) Darryl Lewis DB Arizona

2 (44) John Flannery C Syracuse

3 (71) Steve Jackson DB Purdue

3 (79) Kevin Donnalley T N. Carolina

4 (101) David Rocker DT Auburn

4 (102) Marc Robertson DB Iowa St.

– Comment: One of first teams to jump completely out of the first round by trading with Patriots, Oilers satisfied a big need at safety with Dumas. Big center Flannery may allow all-pro guard Bruce Matthews to return to best position and Jackson adds depth at cornerback.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

2 (40th) Shane Curry DE Miami, Fla.

3 (69) Dave McCloughan DB Colorado

4 (96) Mark Vander Poel T Colorado

– Comment: After eyeing the paucity of talent in this draft, Colts are doubly sure they made right choice in trading for Jeff George last year. Second-rounder Curry could help at weak spot, but college coach Jimmy Johnson didn`t want him. McCloughan is son of former Raider Kent. Vander Poel is big project who could provide important depth.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

1 (21st) Harvey Williams RB LSU

2 (50) Joe Valerio T Penn

3 (77) Tim Barnett WR Jackson St.

– Comment: With Barry Word and Christian Okoye, running back didn`t seem to be a high priority, but Williams will add speed. He gained more yards in Texas high school than Eric Dickerson. Chiefs waited until Barnett in third round to address major receiver need. Steve DeBerg bought another year when Chiefs refused to add a top quarterback.

LOS ANGELES RAIDERS

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

1 (24th) Todd Marinovich QB USC

2 (43) Nick Bell RB Iowa

4 (100) Raghib Ismail WR Notre Dame

– Comment: Marinovich expected to be better than dad, a journeyman guard for Raiders in 60s. Al Davis also took chance on Bell, who slipped out of first round despite imposing 255-pound size and high grades. And fourth-round pick of Ismail is reminiscent of Davis`s 1987 pick of Bo Jackson, who went unsigned in 1986 draft.

MIAMI DOLPHINS

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

1 (23rd) Randal Hill WR Miami, Fla.

3 (60) Aaron Craver RB Fresno St.

– Comment: Cocky Hill is fast, but why didn`t college coach Jimmy Johnson take him instead of Alvin Harper if he`s so good? Dolphins need insurance for Mark Clayton and Mark Duper. Hill was second-fastest receiver to Ismail at scouting combines. Third-rounder Craver was projected as first-rounder by some. Also will add speed to 22d rushing offense.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

1 (11th) Pat Harlow OT USC

1 (14) Leonard Russell RB Arizona St.

2 (41) Jerome Henderson DB Clemson

3 (56) Calvin Stephens G S. Carolina

4 (84) Scott Zolak QB Maryland

– Comment: Not as dumb as they looked after trading No. 1 pick. Instead of going for glitz, they got a blocker and a runner in the first round to help new coach Dick MacPherson pick up the pieces of a 1-15 season. But the Patriots missed out on the top quarterbacks and could regret it.

NEW YORK JETS

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

2 (34th) Browning Nagle QB Louisville

3 (62) Morris Lewis LB Georgia

4 (94) Mark Gunn DT Pittsburgh

– Comment: Continuing in the quarterback collection business, Jets add Nagle to Ken O`Brien, Tony Eason, and Troy Taylor. Playing for pro-style coach Howard Schnellenberger should help. Traded up with Packers to land linebacker Lewis. With 23d defense and 16th offense, Jets are more than one draft away from solving all their problems.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

1 (15th) Huey Richardson DE Florida

2 (46) Jeff Graham WR Ohio St.

3 (73) Ernie Mills WR Florida

4 (88) Sammy Walker DB Texas Tech

4 (103) Adrian Cooper TE Oklahoma

– Comment: Richardson was a surprise pick for a team desperate for wide receivers. But with only four wideouts going in first round, Steelers got quality help in Graham in second round. Steelers finished first in league in defense last year and Richardson will add to Chuck Noll`s quiet rebuilding job.

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

1 (9th) Stanley Richard DB Texas

2 (36) George Thornton DT Alabama

2 (39) Eric Bieniemy RB Colorado

2 (47) Eric Moten G Michigan St.

4 (90) Yancey Thigpen WR Winston-Salem

– Comment: General manager Bobby Beathard zeroed in on Richard from the start to stabilize a defense that wasn`t all bad (fifth). Thornton solidifies the defensive line and Bienemy adds speed and versatility to an offense that already has big rusher Marion Butts. Beathard`s track record with Washington is excellent, but the Chargers still have a big quarterback question.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

Who they picked

Round Player Pos. School

1 (16th) Dan McGwire QB San Diego St.

2 (51) Doug Thomas WR Clemson

3 (74) David Daniels WR Penn St.

4 (98) John Kasay K Georgia

– Comment: Tired of David Krieg and unimpressed by recent first-rounder Kelly Stouffer, the Seahawks made the 6-8 McGwire the biggest man on campus. Seahawks need little Thomas and Daniels to fill big weakness at wide receiver. McGwire, first quarterback chosen, thinks he was helped by new rule limiting the ”in-the-grasp” whistle.
