Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
1 (22nd) Stan Thomas OT Texas
2 (49) Chris Zorich DT Notre Dame
3 (78) Chris Gardocki P-K Clemson
4 (105) Joe Johnson CB N.C. State
– Comment: Thomas and Zorich provide backup help where Bears need it most. Gardocki is surprise pick, the first bona-fide placekicker-punter prospect in years. ”Best I`ve ever seen at doing both,” said Clemson coach Ken Hatfield. Went to same high school as Kevin Butler in Redan, Ga. ”I used to always act like I was Kevin Butler when I was younger,” Gardocki said.
ATLANTA FALCONS
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
1 (3rd) Bruce Pickens CB Nebraska
1 (13) Mike Pritchard WR Colorado
2 (33) Brett Favre QB S. Mississippi
4 (87) Moe Gardner NT Illinois
– Comment: Pickens and Pritchard will complement Deion Sanders and Andre Rison as coach Jerry Glanville makes bid to become fastest team in league. Trade with Miami for cornerback Tim McKyer is protection in case Sanders stays with baseball. Pritchard and Rison allow Glanville to use more run-and-shoot offense.
DALLAS COWBOYS
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
1 (1) Russell Maryland DT Miami, Fla.
1 (12) Alvin Harper WR Tennessee
2 (37) Dixon Edwards LB Michigan State
3 (63) Godfrey Myles LB Florida
3 (64) James Richards G California
3 (70) Eric Williams T Central St. Ohio
4 (97) Curvin Richards RB Pittsburgh
4 (106) Bill Musgrave QB Oregon
4 (108) Tony Hill DE Tenn-Chttnga
4 (110) Kevin Harris DE Texas Southern
– Comment: Lost the Rocket, but got best defensive lineman in Maryland.
DETROIT LIONS
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
1 (10th) Herman Moore WR Virginia
1 (20) Kelvin Pritchett DT Mississippi
3 (58) Reggie Barrett WR Tex.-El Paso
4 (91) Kevin Scott DB Stanford
– Comment: Moore satisfies coach Wayne Fontes` desire for bigger receiver to fill semi-tight end role in run-and-shoot. He follows Andre Ware and Barry Sanders as third skilled offensive selection in row. Lions so desperate for defense they gave 2d, 3d, and 4th picks to Dallas for Pritchett. Got Barrett with pick from Chuck Long trade.
GREEN BAY PACKERS
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
1 (19th) Vincent Clark DB Ohio St.
2 (35) Esera Tuaolo DT Oregon St.
3 (67) Don Davey DE Wisconsin
3 (81) Chuck Webb RB Tennessee
– Comment: Traded down and still came up with immediate help in the secondary in Clark. Tuaolo was Pac 10 defensive lineman of 1989 before knee injury slowed him. As intense as Chris Zorich, Tuaolo brings another plus: he sang the national anthem before the Senior Bowl. Trade to get Eagles` No. 1 pick next year a steal. Davey, Webb could contribute fast.
LOS ANGELES RAMS
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
1 (5th) Todd Lyght CB Notre Dame
2 (31) Roman Phifer LB UCLA
4 (107) Robert Bailey DB Miami, Fla.
– Comment: New defensive coordinator Jeff Fisher likes cornerbacks in his Buddy Ryan-style scheme. With no pass rushers, Lyght will earn his money in a hurry. Rams were 27th in pass defense and Lyght and linebacker Phifer will only start to turn things around.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
3 (65) Carlos Jenkins LB Michigan St.
3 (68) Jake Reed WR Grambling
4 (92) Randy Baldwin RB Mississippi
– Comment: Watched Cowboys parlay picks from Herschel Walker trade into all kinds of bodies. Time will tell if they ever will be jealous. In third round, Vikings filled two needs in linebacker Jenkins and receiver Reed who carried better than average grades. Junior running back Baldwin also is an interesting future prospect. But Walker must produce more if Vikings are ever to like this draft.
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
2 (42nd) Wesley Carroll WR Miami, Fla.
– Comment: Saints used their No. 1 pick last year to trade for Steve Walsh, which looks like a good deal in this crop. With their only pick in the first four rounds, they got one of the fastest wide receivers in the bunch in Carroll. Saints were 26th in passing offense and the absence of speed was a big reason. Saints would still like to sign quarterback Bobby Hebert.
New York Giants
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
1 (27th) Jarrod Bunch FB Michigan
2 (55) Kanavis McGhee LB Colorado
3 (83) Ed McCaffrey WR Stanford
4 (111) Clarence Jones T Maryland
– Comment: Biggest team in football added to size with 245-pounder Bunch, who will push Maurice Carthon for starting job. Bunch is a better runner than Carthon. McGhee was a first-round projection by some. He will learn from Lawrence Taylor, Pepper Johnson and Carl Banks on a team that can`t get enough big linebackers.
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
1 (8th) Antone Davis OT Tennessee
2 (48) Jesse Campbell DB N. Caro. St.
3 (75) Rob Selby OT Auburn
4 (104) William Thomas LB Texas A&M
– Comment: Gave up huge price of next year`s first-round pick to Packers to land Davis, but Eagles were desperate for offensive line help to protect Randall Cunningham. Campbell, a first-round projection, could step right into starting lineup at safety. Selby is a 300-pound project. Trade of No. 1 pick can`t be blamed on Buddy Ryan.
PHOENIX CARDINALS
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
1 (6th) Eric Swann DE No college
2 (32) Mike Jones DE N. Carolina St.
3 (59) Aeneas Williams DB Southern U
4 (86) Dexter Davis DB Clemson
– Comment: Leave it to the Cardinals to take the biggest, earliest gamble in Swann. The defensive lineman with no college experience could either change the Cards` poor draft reputation or add another chapter. ”The teams that didn`t pick me were taking a big risk,” Swann said. Second pick Jones underscores Cardinals` desperation on the defensive line.
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
1 (25th) Ted Washington DT Louisville
2 (45) Ricky Watters RB Notre Dame
2 (53) John Johnson LB Clemson
4 (95) Mitch Donahue LB Wyoming
– Comment: Few teams find pass rushers better than the 49ers, but Washington is a 300-pounder with a weight problem and 49ers failed to address holes at safety and running back caused by the defections of Ronnie Lott and Roger Craig. Selection of Johnson in round two, called a reach by some experts, underscores 49ers` concern on defense.
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
1 (7th) Charles McRae OT Tennessee
3 (66) Lawrence Dawsey WR Florida St.
3 (80) Robert Wilson RB Texas A&M
4 (93) Tony Covington DB Virginia
– Comment: McRae will play opposite Paul Gruber to give the Bucs two potential all-pros to block for Vinny Testaverde. Their second-rounder went to San Diego last year for running back Gary Anderson. The Chargers used it to select Eric Bienemy. The Bucs settled for third-rounder Wilson.
WASHINGTON REDSKINS
Who they picked
Round Player Pos. School
1 (17th) Bobby Wilson DT Michigan St.
3 (76) Ricky Ervins RB USC
– Comment: Chicago Austin`s Wilson became Redskins` first No. 1 draft choice since Darrell Green in 1983. But the Redskins had to trade up to get him. Then they turned to old boss Bobby Beathard and got an extra No. 1 in 1992 by giving up their second and fifth picks this year. Ervins will add needed speed if healthy.
