TRACK AND FIELD

– SICA West Meet-Joliet Central won the meet championship with 144 points, with Lockport second at 123, Lincoln-Way third at 85 and defending Class AA state champion Joliet West fourth at 80. The winning Steelmen had four individual winners: Milton Bass in the long jump (21-1 1/2), Bob Hauert in the shot put (50-5), Marlo Epting in the 100 (11.0), and the 1,600 relay (25.50)

”In a meet like this, you never know how our kids will react as a team,” said Joliet Central coach Dave Christianson. ”For us to win, we knew we had to score in every event. On paper it looked good. Fortunately, the guys went out and actually did it.”

The meet`s individual star was Lincoln-Way`s Nate Shaffer, who won the 800 in 1:57.30 and the 1,600 in 4:22.2. Both were meet records.

”I knew the records coming into the meet,” he said. ”My time in the 800 was my best of the season. It was the 1,600 I was not sure about tonight, but that was my second-best time so I was pleased with both.”
