K mart Corp. said discount pricing helped the nation`s No. 3 retailer buck the recession and earn 7.4 percent more in its fiscal first quarter than in the same period of 1990. Troy, Mich.-based K mart`s net income in the 13 weeks ending May 1 totaled $107.5 million, or 53 cents a share, up from $100.1 million, or 50 cents a share, a year earlier. Sales rose 8.5 percent, to $7.64 billion from $7.04 billion. Sales at stores open at least a year rose 4.3 percent.
