Everyone was in court Tuesday for the sentencing except the defendant. Robert Goral, 32, couldn`t be found.
”I have been unsuccessful in reaching him,” said Gayle Shapiro, an assistant Cook County public defender who repesented Goral, a recent immigrant from Poland, at his one-day trial, where he was convicted of the theft of a $1,350 women`s sweater from Neiman-Marcus in Northbrook.
Assistant State`s Atty. Bonnie Phemister said Goral, who had been free on bond, apparently ”took off.”
Cook County Circuit Judge Michael Jordan, sitting in the Skokie branch of Circuit Court, decided he would sentence Goral in absentia, giving Goral 30 months` probation.
