There are various visual clues that signal the beginning of Chicago`s summer (nobody trusts the calendar in this town). Buckingham Fountain springs to life. The Wendella and Mercury boats begin skimming the water. Condos hold their Hawaiian-luau pool-opening festivities. The baseball teams are sources of serious concern.
And the sidewalk cafes sprout up.
There are few joys in life that can surpass a good meal, outdoors, on a perfect Chicago summer day. Which goes a long way toward explaining why so many Chicago restaurants offer outdoor dining.
And why we put together this handy little (little?) list.
Chicago`s well-deserved reputation for culinary diversity is borne out in this year`s al fresco roundup. From simple setups (a few chairs on the sidewalk) to elaborate (a dramatically lit landscaped yard), across a wide range of styles, this year`s crop of outdoor dining spots has a little something for everyone. Want live entertainment? You`ll find it here. If you`re looking for romance-and who isn`t-we`ve even got a few outdoor fireplaces for you. We`ve even categorized some of the restaurants for easy reference.
Last year at this time, you may recall, Chicago`s al fresco season was very much in the news. Snafus with city licenses threatened to postpone the openings of the city`s beer gardens. (Beer gardens differ from sidewalk cafes- beer gardens operate on private property while sidewalk cafes operate on city property-and operate under different rules.)
Things are much calmer this year, to just about everyone`s relief. And while several outdoor spots from last year haven`t returned, there are more than enough newcomers to take their places.
Ultimately, the appeal of outdoor dining has much to do with the fleeting nature of the outdoor season. There are so few days, all clustered in a relatively small number of weeks, in which outdoor dining is possible, let alone desirable. In Chicago, we learn quickly to cherish those moments.
Enjoy.
