Jack Payton`s May 23 op-ed article, ”Donor fatigue, writ large,” struck a responsive chord in me.
I`m widowed, retired and live on pensions, Social Security and investment income which afford me a modest but comfortable lifestyle. I feel very fortunate at this time of my life, so I do contribute to a variety of charitable organizations. After a period of years, I have limited my donations to twenty groups.
My gripe is that I am bombarded with mail from groups seeking funds. Several organizations call me on the telephone. A number of them have suggested I mention them in my will. Hardly a day goes by that I don`t receive at least one request for money. It seems they all spend too much money attempting to get more money.
I know there are many worthy causes, but I can only give so much money to so many groups. The endless badgering only irritates me and does not increase my generosity. I`m sure this is not the effect the various organizations had in mind.
