After a fact-finding mission, a U.S. congressman warned that Asian countries must address questions of intravenous drug use and prostitution in the spread of AIDS or face an overwhelming epidemic. Calling Asia the ”sleeping giant” of AIDS, Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), a physician and chairman of a task force studying the spread of AIDS abroad, said, ”If religious institutions and politicians fail to understand the immense tragedy at their doorstep,
(AIDS) infection rates will set new records.” The World Health Organization estimates that 500,000 Asians, primarily in India and Thailand, are infected with the AIDS virus.
