I had a good laugh after reading the front page story ”Summer reading assignments burn some Wauconda parents.” Mothers were predicting ruined vacation plans, children would have to give up horseback riding lessons and this horrific proposal would be the end of everyone`s summer freedom!

This was caused because some schools were requiring their students to read one 400-page book during the summer. If the matter of reading an average of four pages a day is so time-consuming that the activity demands the child`s entire day, then that child ought to be in remedial reading classes during the summer and not worrying about having enough loafing time.

Reading is one of summer`s pleasures, not punishments. What else do you do while sunning on the beach? How better to fill a lazy, nothing-happening afternoon with excitement that doesn`t cost money? How else do you ”come down” from a day`s activity without reading a few pages in bed?
