Please excuse my appalling lack of ”political correctness,” but I can muster nothing but feelings of disgust and contempt for the spectacle staged on June 24 in the downtown area by the group ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power). As an employee of a downtown firm, I was witness to acts of criminal damage to property and harassment of the police by this gang of misguided miscreants and cheap street hoodlums carousing under the guise of
”activism.”
The building in which I work was plastered with stickers and sprayed with paint by people who apparently feel their rights of assembly and free speech also entitle them to criminally trespass and damage private property. These acts of wanton ignorance and destruction effectively eliminated any consideration of sympathy I or any of my fellow workers would have been inclined to give to ACT UP`s cause.
Members of ACT UP will never garner any support or sympathy for their cause when their demonstrations consist of street carnival antics.
