State officials have received three recent reports of zebra mussels discovered in the Illinois River, an indication that the potentially damaging species is spreading throughout the state faster than expected.
The mussels, which first appeared in Lake Michigan last year, clog industrial water-intake pipes and the cooling systems of recreational boat motors. A single zebra mussel can produce 30,000 to 40,000 offspring a year.
