Every resident of Illinois knows by now why former Gov. Jim Thompson chose not to seek another term as governor: because of the huge deficit which Gov. Jim Edgar inherited. Mr. Thompson knew such a cover-up would catch up to him. Mr. Thompson must have taken lessons from Mr. Reagan and President Bush. The shortfall, according to Mr. Thompson, was $400 million. Suddenly it turns out to be over $1.5 billion.

I pity the people who hire his law firm for advice, especially on financial matters.
