The appointment of a successor to Thurgood Marshall on the U.S. Supreme Court may help set the direction of American life well into the next century. It is easy to take a simplistic view that the selection of a ”liberal” or a ”conservative” new justice is just a superficial political or ideological choice.
However, there is a more fundamental difference between the liberal and the conservative when it comes to the Supreme Court. The liberal protects the freedom of all Americans. The conservative believes that he is right and everyone else is wrong, and that everyone else ought to obey his moral code.
Mr. Bush must be stopped in his unveiled assault of the rights and freedoms of Americans. The Reagans and Bushes of the world believe that they are above the law and that their rich friends will not have their lives ruined by their new order of totalitarianism. The rest of us have to live in the cold, ugly world they are creating.
