The county has begun work on a transit development plan to address the needs of commuters.

The work will be done by the Regional Planning Commission and will be financed by the Regional Transportation Authority.

The plan will deal with current and future needs. Planning officials estimate the population of 780,000 will grow to more than 985,000 in 20 years and the number of jobs to 641,000 from 445,000.

The third facet of the plan will involve a search for new ways to handle transit problems.

The first draft of recommendations is anticipated later this year, officials said.
