If Clarence Thomas becomes our next Supreme Court justice, it is hoped that he will prove himself worthy of the position. What is problematical about his nomination, however, is his lack of experience as a judge (less than two years) and his undistinguished track record.

George Bush wants Clarence Thomas on the court because Thomas is a conservative. Apparently Bush believes that a black conservative has a better chance of being approved than a white one. But in nominating a man with so little to recommend him, the president is acting irresponsibly.

The American people deserve the best possible candidate and Thomas does not fulfill that criterion.
