In response to a recent editorial ”No nuclear weapons for Iraq”: It`s about time everyone realizes Iraq has been pursuing an aggressive nuclear weapons program since the early `70s, aided by Italy, Germany, Brazil and France. France has the honor of providing the most in both hardware and knowledge.
Iraq since the late `60s has been a signatory of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, thereby legally having access to the world`s nuclear library and resources. In the early `70s Iraq ordered four breeder-type nuclear reactors, which would have generated more than twice the total amount of electricity Iraq consumes. Furthermore, Iraq has been buying refinable uranium from all over the world, with the United Nations and other countries turning a blind eye.
Let`s not play any games here. Regardless of what government sources say, there can be little doubt that Iraq is a nuclear player. Perhaps this gives some explanation as to why the Desert Storm offensive was called off at a time when Iraq had all but lost the war. A cornered Saddam is a dangerous animal.
