Recently I encountered a middle-aged single mother with a psychiatric illness whose young daughter is developing emotional problems because of maternal neglect and possible abuse. The day after I spent much effort trying to find an available mental health and social service center which could see this uninsured patient, I read that this same center is scheduled to be phased out with Gov. Edgar`s proposed budget. How ironic to read elsewhere in the newspaper that day (INC., June 25) that the governor`s wife has agreed to be the honorary chairperson of the Child Abuse Prevention Service.
