I read with interest Marja Mills` story in the July 5 Tribune about Arlington Heights teaching sign language to its fire and police officers. The State of Illinois will issue, at no additional charge, a state license plate with an ”H” before the number to anyone who is hearing impaired. This will immediately alert any emergency personnel that there may be a hearing-impaired person in the car.

I am a member of the Chicago-South Suburban Chapter of SHHH (Self Help for the Hard of Hearing.) SHHH also recommends a sticker or sign on your outside entrances to alert firemen in case of a fire at home.
