Your WOMANEWS section continues to disappoint me with an insidious pro-abortion stance that regularly permeates your choice of articles and is decidedly anti-woman. As a member of the Professional Women`s Network and the Family Life League, I vehemently disagree that pro-abortion is ever pro-woman. The ”No Health Care” article appearing in the June 23 edition was particularly upsetting. In speaking of women`s reproductive health problems, Worldwatch attributes 250,000 deaths (exclusive of babies killed) to
”unsafe” abortion practices. Are we to presume that ”legal” is tantamount to ”safe” and that none of these are happening in industrialized nations? Would legalized abortion worldwide eliminate maternal deaths? No on both counts.
Abortion is inherently unsafe because it is an unnatural termination of pregnancy. The female body is designed to protect the child and tools of the abortionist not only kill the child, but often scar and traumatize women. How does legalization of this exploitive practice advance the cause of women? If Worldwatch truly upheld the dignity of women and sanctity of motherhood, they would advocate family planning counseling that discouraged abortion and encouraged childbearing and adoption.
What could be more uniquely feminine than giving birth to a child; what could be more anti-woman than robbing women of this experience through abortion?
