I am one of those fellows John McCarron wrote about on June 30 whose earnings disqualified him from getting Social Security. I am 69, so only have a year to go to be unaffected by the earnings test.

There is a bill in Congress, HR 2460, ”The Older Americans Freedom to Work Act,” which will eliminate the earnings test for those over 65. The sponsor is Rep. J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill). Ways and Means Chairman Dan Rostenkowski thinks this is not a good bill, so it languishes somewhere in limbo.

It`s funny, but if a representative has a million bucks of unspent campaign funds stashed away, he or she can walk away with the whole bundle;

but if one works 46 years or so, he or she has to meet an earnings test to get money that was taken out of his pay for all that time.

Thanks for putting the spotlight on the subject.
