– In diving, Patrick Jeffrey led a trio from Ft. Lauderdale atop the leader board after the three-meter springboard preliminaries.

Jeffrey, a former three-time NCAA champion and a member of the 1988 Olympic team, scored 608.85 to finish ahead of Mark Lenzi and Kent Ferguson.

Lenzi, the current U.S. champion on three-meter springboard, scored a 587.85, while Ferguson, the three-meter world champion, had 559.71. The top 12 advanced to Saturday`s finals.

In the women`s 10-meter preliminaries, Courtney Nelson of Brigham Young University edged Mary Ellen Clark of Ft. Lauderdale. Nelson, a two-time NCAA platform champion, scored 385.77 while Clark had 381.75.

– The West baseball team secured a berth in the gold medal game by beating the North 5-2. Chris Smith of Vallejo, Calif., had a two-run double in a five-run first inning for the West (2-1). The North is 0-3 in round-robin play.
