Crystal Lake trustees have given preliminary approval to a development that had initially received strong opposition from neighboring residents.

Spring Ridge, a planned unit development, would be located northeast of the intersection of Illinois Highway 176 and Oak Street on the city`s north side. Included on the 22.6 acres will be 36 single-family homes and 36 townhouses.

Residents living near the property at first objected strongly to the proposed plan because of its density, which was much higher than what was approved.

The three- and four-bedroom homes will have minimum lot sizes of 10,000 square feet and a starting price of around $150,000. The two- and three-bedroom town homes will start at $100,000.

”It`s going to provide affordable housing in this city and it`s a good location, near the downtown and schools,” said John Simko, one of the owners and developers of the property.
