This is in regard to a letter by Mark Joncas (July 5, ”ACT UP antics”). Poor Mr. Joncas. Your world was shook up for a few hours because of antics of a group of human beings whose lives have been stirred upside-down and ignored for over a decade. All because of AIDS, a disease whose effects have caused thousands of men and women to accept the deaths of their friends at ages 20, 30, etc., as an everyday occurrence. All while your straight, moral preaching society does nothing but say ”you brought it on yourself.”

We don`t want your sympathy. When your family and friends are dying at an inexcusably early age and no one takes interest, when you are ignored (other than being bashed for following your intuitive feelings) for decades, maybe I`ll worry about your opinions.

You say that now this incident has ”eliminated any consideration of sympathy” to ACT UP`s cause. Well, sympathy doesn`t go very far. ACT UP is fighting a war for a community of people who are fighting for their lives. A few cans of spray paint and shouts doesn`t compare to the ignorance and bigotry held by you and your ”fellow workers.”
