As a reader of the Voice of the People I am forced to ask, just what will it take to make conservatives happy? They have been in power for well over a decade, have managed to turn liberal into a dirty word, yet the tone of their letters is that of an aggrieved, picked-on minority.
But the latest spate of letters defies even their minimum standards of rationality. They are now trying to twist George Orwell`s writing to paint themselves as unfairly abused victims. They rant about how dreadful
”politically correct” ”thought police” are trying to silence them. Come again? Do they live in the same world as the rest of us?
Isn`t it the conservative thought police who went into absolute hysteria over Roseanne Barr`s performing the national anthem in a way they didn`t like and don`t have the sense of humor to laugh off? Wasn`t it the conservative thought police who threw themselves to the floor and drummed their little feet over the Mapplethorpe exhibit? And aren`t they the ones who threatened, again success-fully, the National Endowment for the Arts when it supported art they couldn`t understand? And aren`t they now crowing with delight at having censored what poor women and their doctors may even speak about?
In the name of reason, how much more success and power will it take to satisfy them?
