A Chinese couple has been sentenced to prison for abandoning their baby girl five years ago because they preferred a boy, according to Legal Daily, an official Chinese newspaper. The parents had left the baby at a hospital nursery. The father received a four-year prison term and the mother a two-year term. Chinese law allows only one child a couple, and most couples prefer a boy to carry on the family name and care for elderly parents.
