”A genuine aura of Thanksgiving” is how Bruce Dvorak, a landscape architect, described the mood at a recent dedication of Habitat for Humanity homesite in Uptown.
Dvorak was one of four landscape architects from James Martin Associates Inc. who volunteered time to develop a master plan for the 12-unit site at Leland and Kenmore Avenues.
Sue Lange, another landscape architect with the Vernon Hills firm, proposed the idea of a landscape design to her co-workers after reading about a Mick DeGiulio, a local kitchen designer who became involved with Habitat for Humanity by donating and installing cabinets in the building.
(The national program, which counts former President Jimmy Carter among its volunteers, builds homes and sells them to low-income families at prices they can afford.)
The master landscaping plan focused on the importance of personal space and security, said Tim Bolas, the design team project manager.
”The design is simple, but provides more of an outdoor living area than many of these people have ever had.
”Each owner`s entryway is defined by a low hedge that provides personal space for flower pots, seating or anything that will make home feel like home.”
