Single parents need to know about the positive aspects of single-parent families, says a family consultant who will lead a seminar this week.
Mary Ellen Gornick, a social worker with Corporate Parenting Associates of Skokie, a family-counseling firm, says children who grow up in such families can become more self-sufficient and independent as adults.
Gornick will talk about typical difficulties faced in one-parent households, including children who play divorced parents against one other.
She says two strategies for dealing with typical single-parent family problems are increasing communication with their children and teaching them responsibility.
”Parenting Strategies for Single Parents” will be presented at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago at 6 p.m. Monday. The cost is $10. For room location and registration call 312-908-7014 or 708-673 0687.
